Project for people affected with neurofibromatosis

This projects offers Equotherapy for children and adolescents with neurofibromatosis and as well as their families. In the year 2015 there was the first pilot project. We are very happy that further projects could be continued in 2016. There are about 4000 people with neurofibromatosis in Austria. It belongs to the group of very rare illnesses, but among this group it is the most frequent. Nevertheless, there is a very poor provision of medical care and support for families. That’s why Equotherapy offers a measure of resource- orientated support with horses to strengthen affected people and their families.

Within the context of this project, there are the following offerings:

Family-Weekend – “Can you see me?”

The Family- Weekend is aimed for families with a child having neurofibromatosis. Besides the opportunity of an exchange of experiences, each participant receives an individual support with problem-solving tasks and cooperation exercises around the horse. Besides the individual work with the families, there is a focus on the exchange of experiences among parents and on the learning from each other among children. (2015/16 the association “NF-Kinder Österreich” cooperated with the Austria “Kinderkrebshilfe” and made the financing possible.)

Weekend for adolescents- “Together forward”

The weekends are for adolescents (and their siblings) who are affected with neurofibromatosis. The focus lies on dealing with this illness and experiences, as well as central themes of growing up. The programme with the horses and spending time in nature encourage to act self-determined in the group and offers possibilities for new contacts. (The association “NF-Kinder Österreich” made the financing possible.)

Regular therapy-sessions

Children with neurofibromatosis and their siblings receive therapy sessions regularly in the therapycenter in Vienna. The horse and the therapists represent a friend and partner to share joy and grief and accompany the children during the year. (private financing)
